Motivation:
I respectfully submit this motivation in support of my request for a laptop to enable me to continue my academic and professional responsibilities.
I am currently a Master of Laws (LLM) student at the University of Pretoria. Despite my commitment to my studies, I do not have a bursary or external financial support and I still have outstanding university fees. Like many postgraduate students, I face significant financial constraints that make it impossible for me to purchase a laptop, even though it has become an essential tool for both my studies and my work.
In addition to being a full-time postgraduate student, I am employed as a Teaching Assistant within the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria. My responsibilities require me to prepare learning materials, communicate with students and lecturers, access online platforms, mark and review academic work, conduct research, and complete administrative tasks. Without reliable access to a personal laptop, fulfilling these responsibilities efficiently and professionally has become increasingly difficult.
As an LLM student, my research demands are extensive. I spend many hours reading academic literature, analysing legislation and case law, drafting research papers, and preparing my dissertation. Access to a personal laptop would enable me to conduct legal research from home, work more effectively with academic databases, attend online meetings when required, and produce work of the standard expected at postgraduate level. At present, I depend heavily on shared university computers, which limits my productivity because they are not always available and cannot accommodate the flexibility required for sustained research and writing.
Receiving a laptop would not simply provide me with a device; it would remove one of the greatest barriers to my academic success and professional development. It would allow me to meet my responsibilities as a Teaching Assistant while continuing to pursue academic excellence in my postgraduate studies. It would also support my long-term goal of contributing meaningfully to legal scholarship and the legal profession in South Africa.
I have remained committed to my education despite financial hardship, and I continue to work diligently to support myself while pursuing my studies. A laptop would be a life-changing investment in my education, enabling me to maximise the opportunities I have worked so hard to attain.
I sincerely ask that my application be considered favourably. Your support would make a profound difference to my academic journey and would equip me with the essential tools needed to complete my degree successfully and continue serving both the University of Pretoria community and my future profession.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and generosity.
